This is the second lesson in a series of lessons that will introduce you to the Bible. The Bible or “the Book”, which is the literal meaning of the word Bible, can be intimidating. It is a large book and is composed of 66 smaller books. Some of these books are historical documents and others are poetry, prophecy or letters. The letters were sometimes written to individuals and other times to groups of people; whether a church or an entire nation.
The Bible is divided into two major collections of books. The Old Testament is composed of 39 books and describes the beginning of human life and civilization and the history of the Jewish people up until the time of Jesus who is also called Christ. The New Testament is composed of 27 books, many of which were written as letters to churches, individuals and large regions of the world like Asia where many churches had been established.
Forty different authors wrote the Bible over a period of 1600 years starting around 1500 B.C. and ending around 70 A.D. Moses wrote the first 5 books of the Bible. Moses describes the creation of the world in the first book of the Bible called Genesis (meaning beginnings). He also described the growth of human civilization and the invention of musical instruments and methods of mining ore from the earth. He described the flood of Noah and the rebirth of civilization after the flood. The books Exodus (the exit or departure), Leviticus (the law), Numbers (the numbering of the nation of Israel), and Deuteronomy (the second giving of the law) were written to show the beginnings of the nation of Israel and the relationship they had with the creator of the Universe, God.
Some of the authors of the book were kings like David, the second king of the nation of Israel and Solomon, the third king of Israel and the son of David. Others were prophets like Samuel, Isaiah, and Jeremiah. Some were farmers and others were fishermen, tax collectors, teachers and a physician named Luke wrote one of the New Testament gospels concerning Jesus and a book called the Acts of the Apostles. Several of the authors were the half-brothers of Jesus and were named Jude and James. What is of great interest is that those who wrote the Bible were from every spectrum of life. Some were wealthy and others poor. Some were well educated and others had no formal schooling. Some were young when they wrote and others were very old. All were men.
While the Bible is a big book of 1189 chapters, the fact is it can be read out loud in around 70 hours.
